How to throw a housewarming (and do a registry without it feeling weird)
Timing, guest list, what to serve in a house with no furniture, and the etiquette of asking for help with a home.
A housewarming is the one party where nobody expects the host to have it together. The house is half-unpacked, there are four chairs, and everyone came to see the place and hug you. Lean into that.
When
Four to eight weeks after you move in. Early enough that people are still excited, late enough that the boxes are out of the living room and you have found the good glasses. A Saturday or Sunday afternoon, 2–5 p.m., is the format that works: it is a drop-in, not a dinner, so people can see the house and go.
Who
Everyone who helped — the friend who drove the truck, the parents who funded the closing costs, the agent who found it. Housewarmings are the natural thank-you for the people who filled your jar, and inviting them from the same page they pledged on closes the loop: they see the house they helped buy.
What to serve
- Things that do not need a full kitchen or a table: a big board, pizza, a slow cooker of something, a cooler of drinks.
- One signature thing that is about the house — pie from the bakery down the street, beer from the local brewery. It gives people something to talk about besides the paint color.
- Paper plates. This is not the party to run the dishwasher four times.
The registry question
People will ask what to bring, and 'nothing' is the wrong answer — they are going to bring something, and you will end up with six bottles of wine and a candle. The honest answer is 'the house needs things, and here is the list'. A jar page with sub-goals — the patio set, the tool kit, the first-year home warranty — is easier for guests than a store registry, because they can put $40 toward the big thing instead of buying a small thing you did not want.
The etiquette that makes it not weird: put it on the invitation once, in plain language, and never mention it again. 'We are all set on stuff, but if you want to chip in on the deck, here is our page.' Then throw a good party.
